COLLEGIATE CURLY: My Favorite Curly Haired College Girl

Me: Your site appears high up on Google search rankings, how do you do it?

Erinn: I have no idea.

Me: -_-

That’s pretty much how my conversation with Erinn, the owner of the blog “Collegiate Curly”, got started a couple of weeks ago! I have followed her blog for some time, but never worked up the nerve to get in touch with her until recently. Fortunately, she replied pretty quickly to my email and was more than willing to get a conversation going.

I remember when I was browsing Google for curly-haired blogs I would see her blog often. For example, when I would search “curly hair blog”, “blogs about curly hair”, “curly hair tips”, etc. I would notice her blog would appear. Apart from the fact that I wanted to learn more about her, I also wanted to know what her secret was on ranking so highly! I figured she must have been studying the topic in college or was involved in the industry somehow, someway. But, to my complete surprise she had absolutely no idea what SEO even stood for! LOL! I laugh, because it’s crazy how she doesn’t know what it is, but she ranks highly in Google’s searches. I could go on and on about SEO and how powerful it is (I do it for a living with the screen printing company I run with my brothers – Hollywood Screen Printing), but that is not the point of this post. For those of you that would like to learn more or just talk about your experience with it, please let me know! I’d love to talk more about it.

Now, let’s get back to talking about my new favorite curly-haired college girl – Erinn.

Erinn with Collegiate Curly

It’s unfortunate that she lives far away from me. I live in Los Angeles and she lives in St. Louis, because I think that she would be a blast to chill with. Hopefully once she’s done studying pharmacy in college she’ll find a career down here in LA ; )

Hmmm what do I like most about pharmacy?! Well, I have a love hate relationship with it. I’m SOOOO right brained that I really have to channel my inner left brain when I’m dealing with school work or working in a pharmacy because it is cut throat. We are literally dealing with peoples lives, their health (could be life and death) could be dependent upon what we fill or make for them and how the pharmacist counsels them. I guess what I like most about it is being able to know how to correct health issues for some patients, and seeing people heal over time! I’ve always wanted to help people live healthier lives.

I found out that she started her blog, because she got really bored one day (lol, isn’t that how a lot of us got started?). It was around the time she was exploring curly hair products, because she was getting tired of flat ironing it so much. Now that she looks back she says that she can’t believe how often she used to do it! (It’s true, once you go natural and curly you do not go back). Once she launched her blog she says,

At that time a lot of my friends and family were transitioning so i promoted my blog on facebook, tumblr, twitter, and instagram to all of my friends and followers thinking that it would help some of them and it did! I had so many people come up to me telling me that they saw my blog and even had people tell me that they were gonna go natural! It was really exciting!
I came up with the name collegiate curly obviously because I’m a curly headed girl in college haha. The blog was mainly on how to stay natural and healthy in college but really any of the information that i post can be helpful for anyone of any age. I plan on being in college for at least 4-6 more years because of my major, so i haven’t really thought about whats going to happen with the blog then!
She has beautiful looking curls, but one thing that we do not have in common is that she is an only child! She loves art, loves to laugh, and really enjoys meeting new people. She doesn’t have to tell me that twice, because I have asked her a ton of questions and she’s replied to every single one of them! When it comes to music, she loves pop, indie, and r&b with her favorite song at the moment being “The Hatchet” by Jennah Bell.
One thing that I think is really admirable is that she told everyone about her blog when she first started. When I asked her how she initially promoted it she said,
YES! I told everyone I knew about my blog….via facebook lol and other social networks…DON”T BE ASHAMED!!! Your blog is amazing! If you don’t spread the word about it I WILL lol, but yea, I guess it was easy for me because most of my friends were into embracing the whole natural thing at the same time that I created the blog… Most guys that I knew though didn’t really pay attention to it, unless they were trying to impress me, they would tell me that it was cool, but they probably never read a single post of mine, not even the guy I was dating at the time. Are you afraid of what people might think? cause eff the haters! lol jk, i think its awesome to see guys embracing their curls.

The reason why I said I it’s admirable and why she asks me what I was afraid of is because when I started GRO YO FRO I kept my mouth shut. I didn’t tell anybody. When my family would ask me what I was doing I would say that I was doing work for my business or school work or I would come up with same lame excuse. The reason is that I was embarrassed about what I was doing. I loved what I was doing, but at the same time I was embarrassed to admit to it. Things have totally changed now (I have a massive sticker on the back of my bus:

GRO YO FRO 1964 VW Bus

Erinn, however, came out full force and I’m happy for her for doing that!

I feel like I have praised her enough and nobody is perfect, so there is something that I have to put on blast! When I asked her if she liked house music her response was, “Is that music you listen to in a house?” LOL! Just kidding… She asked, “House music?!!! not really sure, like party music?!” LOL

With that said, Erinn, you need to make your way down to Los Angeles and I’ll show you what house music is all about!!! We have an amazing scene here and in the words of Eddie Amador, “It’s a spiritual thing; a body thing; a soul thing.”
